Re: Free 3D Programs "To which to learn with"
I've done a few things in Blender (I made a couple lightsabers and a planet.) It's way different from what I'm used to. I'm looking forward to Blender 2.6, which will finally be able to handle n-gons. (f-gons just don't do the trick because the "f" stand for "fake," it's only pretending to be an n-gon) Maybe then I will feel less like a fish out of water in Blender.

Re: Free 3D Programs "To which to learn with"
Yeah, but I've been modeling for 10+ years in another program, so it's not just a matter of learning Blender, I have to retrain my brain to do things completely differently when I'm using it. If I'd started using it years ago, I think I'd be fine.

Re: Free 3D Programs "To which to learn with"
I've tried Blender, but just could not get my brain around their UI. Hexagon is more natural to me and easier to use in my case with Daz Studio 3 Adv, which I use as my rendering program of choice.
|
Re: Free 3D Programs "To which to learn with"
I mostly learned the UI for Blender 2.49 and then they changed everything for 2.5X. :nonono:

Re: Free 3D Programs "To which to learn with"
LOL, I heard about that. I haven't touched blender since, as I consider it to be evil.
|
Re: Free 3D Programs "To which to learn with"
It's not evil as much as it's tailored to someone's specific needs. It started as a in-house program designed to do what the people using it wanted it to do and how they wanted it to do it. Then it got released, people got hooked on it, and now it has its own foundation. However, for those of us who use other programs, it's like looking at a completely FUBAR version of what you're used to using. But then I've seen people say the same thing about my program of choice, so what do I know?
|
Re: Free 3D Programs "To which to learn with"
No doubt there'll be folks that say the same regarding Hexagon, as it does have it's limitations, but it's the best I can afford at the moment and I have no problems with the interface.
In fact, the interface resembles that of Daz Studio, which is what I began using when I started in 3d rendering. |
Re: Free 3D Programs "To which to learn with"
evil_genius_180 suggested Scriptis to me in the welcome thread. I've just been watching some of the videos and it seems pretty awesome stuff for static props. It even looks simple enough for an old coffin dodger like me to give it a bash, hehehe.

Re: Free 3D Programs "To which to learn with"
Oh yeah, I forgot to post that here. Though, for a while there, I wasn't sure if it was going to stay free. A guy made it and released it but then the company that makes ZBrush bought it, I guess they decided to keep it free. (kind of like a free version of ZBrush)

Re: Free 3D Programs "To which to learn with"
I have added the program to the first page listing.

Re: Free 3D Programs "To which to learn with"
Yeah, it's a cool program. I've seen some people at 3DSciFi do some really crazy cool stuff with it. Though, my personal attempts to do anything with it have not gone well. I managed to make a 3D smiley face but that's about it.
