Good luck with that. TV show budgets mandate cutting costs wherever possible. Reused effects sequences are common in space Sci-Fi shows due to the amount of money they cost to produce.
|
I get the reason . And its a time honored tradition. How many times did we see the same viper shots in the original battlestar Galactica. Just visually I loved the nose art the pilots did in the pilot episode. And I like knowing whose ship is whose. Which pilot it is.
That's one of my issues with some TV shows and movies space battles. All these ships flying around and you don't know who who or care.

Re: ulimann644´s Fleetyard
I love the Bird of Prey explosion from Star Trek VI that was recycled in Generations and I'm pretty sure it appeared on DS9 too. Budget is definitely a huge thing. That's why you'd sometimes see space shows that took place just on the ship, (or space station) with recycled effects shots. They were saving some of their budget for the big effects episodes.

Many thanks.
When it´s ready it belongs definitely on my Fan-Fiction: BABYLON-6 (That´s just the unofficial name for the Military Fleet- Base MFB-VI-023, given it by the crew. Also O´NEILL-CLASS, but a more modern and larger type as B5 - that can establish a hyper-vortex for spaceships, like a Jumpgate. So MFB-VI-023 - or unofficial: BABYLON-6 - is a Fleetbase and a Jumpgate in one. The strategical advantage is that a normal Jumpgate can much easier be destroyed by enemies as a heavy armed fleetbase with a contingent of Fighters and Fighter-Bombers, protected by a Task-Force of 17 Destroyers and Cruisers.)

Re: ulimann644´s Fleetyard
I think I´m totally nuts...
It was not my plan to start another 3D-Project this year, but...
The last days it has prickled in my fingers to try modeling an AKIRA-CLASS Catamaran. My andorian Fan-Fiction Captain commands one ship of this Class, the USS ICICLE, and I´ve thought about creating my own AKIRA-CLASS sometimes during the last years.
I have a great C4D ICICLE-Mesh (made by Mike Wright and The Animaniac) but it´s not my own and I have a few ideas for little changes, by building my own ICICLE Model - but all in all I´ll keep it close to Animaniac´s design. And I hope, it will looking nearly as good as Animaniacs AKIRA when it´s ready...
I´ve started with the catamarans and the rear section today.

That looks nice and clean. Did you subdivide those or use another method? The wires seem a bit "straight" for subdivision.

I´ve used the SubPatch-Tool (Tab) and freezed the object after that.
For the straight lines I´ve added some edges with Band-Saw before.
I´ve uploaded some pics from this step.
And also some pics from the actual mesh.

Re: ulimann644´s Fleetyard
Yeah, that was what I meant when I said subdivision. Sub patch is basically metaform subdivision on steroids.
Thanks for showing the process, that's tremendously helpful in answering my question as to how the verts are so straight.

Thanx.
I´m not satisfied with the narcelles, especially with the ramscoops.
I think I´ll make this part new, before I add some more details at it.
I´ve booled the slot for the deflector-dish.
I´ve also made the bridge, but I positioned it a bit more to the center of the primary hull.
EDIT:
I´ve made the ramscoop new and added a few details to the narcelles.

Re: ulimann644´s Fleetyard
The front part of the under piece (where the deflector cut is) is flatter on the studio model. Otherwise, she's looking great.

That´s true.
I´ve used Animaniacs C4D-mesh to render the Orthos, I use in the LW-editor, and I like his version of the under-piece a bit more than that of the original (and also some other parts that Ani has modified at his version of the AKIRA - like the RCS-Thrusters). You can see it at this pic.
Some other parts I´ll make more canon-style or I modify it my own way.
I guess little changes between ships of the same class are normal (like the different EXCELSIOR-Hulls and Narcelles).
Maybe I try to make it a little more flat as the actual version is.
BTW: I´ve added the additional weapons-pod.

Re: ulimann644´s Fleetyard
Looking great.
That model looks better than the studio model, which was too low poly. Building yours based off of it makes sense. One thing that makes me both laugh and cringe is when people duplicate the segmentation on the First Contact models when they're building them.

Thanks.
I think it´s not easy for some people to find there own way of modeling at the beginning. Or they are just afraid to try something new, or belief that they can learn to create good scifi-meshes in just a few hours...
Today I´ve made not much...
I just added a few details at the primary hull and cutted out the sections for the front- and the rear-gates of the hangardeck.

Re: ulimann644´s Fleetyard
As I always say, any progress is good progress. The cut out areas look good. Are you using booleans or one of the other tools? Or a combination of tools?
Yeah, some people can't do much more than copy. However, to me, there's always room for improvement and it's always a good idea to put your own touch on a design. It helps to distinguish your work from everybody else's work. Plus, I figure these old CGI designs wouldn't have had segmentation if they'd been built today. I've seen Alex Jaeger's concept art and the curves are all smooth.
I really like your added pod and roll bar. I'm thinking of doing something like that on the ship I'm designing.

I´ve used booleans.
At my first mesh I´ve had nothing booled because MAX had fragmented the mesh until I was going nuts... (And C4D do that the same way )
For my surprise, as I´ve made the Connie, I saw that LW didn´t do that.

I´ve seen it and I like the Pod.
BTW: I have added the impulse-drives of the primary-hull and the 3 Phaserbanks of the ICICLE (not 6). Thats enough with 6 additional Pulsphasers.
My plan is to install 3 Torpedolaunchers at the front-part of the under piece, 6 at the front of the rear-section, and 6 at it´s rear-part. That matches with my Fan-Fiction.
As I´ve read the first time about Alex Jaegers specifications for the AKIRA my first impulse was to ignore that. But than I remembered that the Captain of the ICICLE is a 40 years old Andorian, and he is a "go-getter" - a little bit like James Tiberius Kirk, but mostly cooler (but he COULD also explode like a bomb in some situations and he sometimes did it... )
So I made this specifications to a part of my FF and gave the ICICLE two warpcores that it could handle this firepower plus the additional armament.
BTW:
Sorry for the double-post - I can´t find a delete-button.

I agree, it's lookking awesome. Jaeger's stats on the ship are fanboy-ish.
Also, I took care of your double post issue. I don't remember if regular users can do that here.

Inspired by the Romulan Warbird from "Madkoifish" I´ve made my own version of a 22. Century Romulan Warbird for my Fan-Fictions. I´ve changed the look of the ship-hull a little bit to the original TOS design

Thank you.
I've also made my version of the DAEDALUS-CLASS from the STARGATE shows for my "Virtual 6th Season" Fan-Fiction. In this case the SUN TZU. The ship itself was never seen on TV. But Colonel Abraham Ellis, the CO of the APOLLO, mentioned this ship in the last SGA-Episode.
With 3.58 Million polygons it is the most detailed mesh I've made.
I've kicked the old gatling-gun turrets out and installed plasma-cannon turrets for the ships that starts in December 2009 with ATLANTIS.

Re: ulimann644´s Fleetyard
Another DAEDALUS-CLASS - for STAR TREK.
The MU-Version was one of my first meshes years ago (and not very good). I´ve made the version for the Primary-Universe a few months ago. Inspired by two other DAEDALUS-CLASS meshes from "Madkoifish" and "XFozzboute".
I use it for my Fan-Fiction STAR TREK - AFTERMATH, a Trilogy in 2164 - shortly after the end of the Terran-Romulan War and the foundation of the UFP.
I´ve also made the same rockets, like "Madkoifish" made for his DAEDALUS-CLASS. The second pic shows the thruster-effect - left with LW 11 and right with LW 2019.

Re: ulimann644´s Fleetyard
I´ve started to make the PRIDE OF THE GENII - a spaceship from the SGA-novels. I plan to use it also in my Virtual Season Six, because I really like the Idea that the Genii found an old Ancients-Cruiser.
In my FF this ship has 660 meters length. For the DAEDALUS CLASS I use a length from 650 meters over all (with front-antenna). The ship without the big front-antenna has just 600 meters. So the PRIDE is a little longer.
I´ve made just some basics. I plan to make it as detailed as my DAEDALUS-CLASS so I didn´t think that I finish it this year.
