I really like the Starfury one... the others look a little "cut and paste" as they don't really gel with the backgrounds...

Oh BTW the starfury is Mark Kane's (G'Kane) with some work by Fabio...

Keep up the good work!

The Leonov was used on Babylon 5? Really?

I really like that first one. The others are good, but that one is the best, IMO.

in a sense yes .. I found this on line about the design

Quote:
This design bore similarities to Syd Mead's design of the Leonov, a fictional Russian space ship that appeared in the 1984 movie 2010:The Year We Make Contact. When asked for an explanation, J. Michael Straczynski stated on the rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderated newsgroup:

"The ships on 2010 and Babylon 5 operate out of the necessity of traveling without standard SF artificial gravity. These designs have been discussed among scientists (in general) for ages; so there's no intention to be close to 2010, but when both are based upon the same scientific principles, there will be echoes. Form follows function." — J. Michael Straczynski, Source: jmsnews quote archive (1995)

The Leonov leaving Jupiter towards the end of 2010 showing the profile of rotating section.

However, years later Paul Bryant shed light on the subject:

"Yes, I can confirm that I ‘lifted’ the centre section off the Leonov in 2010 for the centrifuge. That's why the profile is exactly the same. I was feeling mischievous, so I added this little nod to the design. I thought someone was going to spot it immediately but no, it was years before anybody called me on it (it would have been an easy fix to change the profile)." — Paul Bryant, Source: B5Scrolls (2008)

The Omega was also designed to appear both un-aerodynamic and imposing. Part of this approach was the inclusion of what later became known as the 'hammer head' by some fans of the show. Namely, the 'cheeks' on either side of the forward-facing fighter recovery bay which were inspired by the Smoke deflectors (or lifters) that appeared on some later steam locomotives.

I'm sure I remember an article by one of the B5 CGI bod's that worked on the show saying that there was a ship that's based on the Liberator from Blake's 7. I've never spotted it myself but maybe some one else can point it out. (I've still got all of the episodes on VHS and give them a play every so often.)

The Sun-Hawk is the one used by the Drazi

Quote:
The CG model of Sun-Hawk was designed and built by Foundation Imaging Co-Founder Ron Thornton and was heavily influenced by the Liberator model from the BBC sci-fi series Blake's 7.
I’d always liked the Liberator (hated by all at the BBC) and the Drazi Sunhawk was my attempt to update it."

Thank you! Thought I was going crazy and imagined it. Now I'll have to find the tape, wind through the episodes and hope that I can find it and see it in action. (Hmmm, I can see why
DVD and blu-ray discs would make this task a wee bit easier to do.)

Ok so here is my embarassing secret. When I was younger I got a book called "Heroes of the Spaceways" pulished in 1981. It was sorta a small encyclopedia of science fiction characters and ships and all. It had the Liberator from Blake's 7 and not until like a year ago had I ever saw the show. Much to my suprise the ship flew the opposite direction I always thought it had.

Writing this i remember I used to have a small die cast toy of it too. Wonder what ever happened to it.

Link to the book if you're interested.

That really takes me back. I got that book from my local library and I'm sure I ended up paying a fine on it for taking it back late. Here's a question. Does anyone remember a magazine that was published in the early 80's called (I think) SCI-Fi modeler?
I know there is a magazine with a similar title now but this was a one off magazine that was published on the back of a big movie release. (It might have been Jedi.) It had paint guides and other modeling information for AMT and Airfix and other model kit companies that produced science fiction models. I did own a copy but was lost in the great attic purge of 1985. (How many models and magazines and whatever have been binned by mothers?) I'm sure that there was a feature on the Airfix Eagle transporter that involved drilling out the grid section and building a box structure to go behind it.

I also think that it had a guide for building a Liberator model from scratch.

I have a magazine at home. Two issues. I think thats the name of it. Not sure have to check. I mentioned it before. It's from around '96 though. Has article s in both about Space Above and Beyond. Kept it for those. Not sure if it's the same as Sci- Fi and Fantasy Modeler. Hmm.

Oh yeah getting back to the B5. I have a model of the jumpgate I found somewhere. I was trying to load it but it was old formats from Lightwave 3. I started with lightwave 5. Actually did get it to load and work for the most part after a while. Needs tweaking. Doesn't have the lens flares and teh "wormhole" part didn't fade at the ends but a gradient map fixed that.

Maybe it was "Fantasy Modeling" that was a short lived modeler magazine in the 80's.

It looks a little bit like the LEONOV - but the OMEGA-CLASS is in some details different.

Ugh, ImageShack. It's even worse on this tablet than it is on my PC.

Having said that, those are some really nice images.

Ha - new Babylon-5 stuff. More will coming soon.

I´ve made this classic scene with the fantastic B5-Modell from Chris Kuhn. I´ve just added a few (hundred) lighttsources for the Station.
