It is. I've seen "tricorders" that scan environments and whatnot and they're usually pretty large and bulky. This medical one sounds small and handy, like a tricorder should be.

Re: Real Trek Tricorder
Years ago they sold "real" tricorders, I remember adds for them in starlog and what not. They looked just like the TNG props, though they didn't fold. They could just do simple things like taking light readings but it was pretty cool.

Re: Real Trek Tricorder
making a simple tricorder shouldn't be too hard to build one. hmm might try my hand at building one.
But this medical one sounds brilliant.

Like hell. I think it would be pretty hard but I'm no inventor or electronics wizard.

I wouldn't mind having both a medical tricorder or the type used onaway missions.

Looks like the link at the Yahoo page has gone away. Googled it and found a new link at:

Technically, you can use a medical tricorder on an away mission. In fact, I have it on good authority that Dr. Crusher never leaves the ship without one.
Though, I'm sure you mean a science tricorder.

Re: Real Trek Tricorder
I remember this when it first came out. Everyone in my office knows I am a Trekkie and diehard Klingon, (yes I have a complete uniform, bat'leth, d'ktagh and all), where I go with others in my ship to raise money for local and national charities and one of my buds here showed me this article.
I was quite impressed and look forward to other major breakthroughs that further confirm the greatness of Star Trek's inspiration for all mankind.

Re: Real Trek Tricorder
I can see you're a die hard Klingon but I honestly never knew Q'onos was really in San Diego. (I guess you learn something new every day. )

Home is where the heart is and that is where it longs to be...Q'onos unfortunately I'm in San Diego...well not that unfortunate. I could have been stationed somewhere worse like Vulcon!

Re: Real Trek Tricorder
Careful. You might get sent to Rua Penthe (Alaska).

Re: Real Trek Tricorder
I wonder...maybe we could come up with a classic design for this new tricorder/phone? I mean something that would look like it is ST but modern as well...

Re: Real Trek Tricorder
I put a laser pointer diode in a TOS phaser toy. It had the sound effects even, but I can't find it now. I also have the two piece phaser, but I don't want to mess it up.
