Blender is a very powerful and totally free application, my company did some work with them at last years SIGGRAPH - WOW stuff. The only problem is the user interface is so unlike other tools (well it's alot like POV) that you may find it difficult. There is a manual you can buy from the Blender site or at Borders.
Strata 3D (the freebie) blows! Unless you want to make pretty spheres and cubes. Even the most basic editing functions are disabled - blah!
Milkshape is not much better.
POV and the loads of plugins and overlays that still make it popular.
Maybe - SoftCad 3D (version 1.16 is free)

Free modeling applications
Hey guys. I'm looking into experimenting with som 3-D modeling. Darrel suggested I ask around to see if anyone knew of any good free programs. Can anybody hook me up? Thanks.

Milkshape 3D comes to mind...
And Blender.
Dunno the locations/URL for them though.

Blender ( www.blender.nl)
Strata 3D (strata.com I think) - This one sucks hardcore, but I decided to list it anyway for the sake of completeness.
Truespace v1.0 (somewhere on the Calgari website)
Those are the only ones I know of.

The demos for Hash Animation Master and Rhino3D are free. The saves are limited though.
