I'm trying to put a label on a section of a conical object...is there a way to do it without the label becoming distorted?

I'd like to know that, too, since it would effectively solve the texturing problems I'm having on the existing Nottingham class mesh...

LW 6 and above: UV map it.

UV's probably the way to go, but if you want a roundabout alternative, go for the oldstyle decal treatment.

In Modeler, create a rectangle with the same aspect as your decal image.
Load your cylinder into the background.
Scale your rectangle so it's the proper size in relation to the cylinder, and move the rectangle to where the decal would be.
In the surface panel, map the decal image to the rectangle. Hit Auto size and make sure Height and Width Tile are on Reset.
Copy this surface layer, switch to the cylinder surface, and paste the layer into the color channel (or wherever). Boom, there it is.

Here's an example:

I mapped the registry image to the blue rectangle, and then copied it to the upper hull surface (which already had several decals). If I had just applied the registry to the hull surface and hit auto size, this would have happened:

Hopefully this even remotely approaches addressing your problem....enjoy!

I tried making the UV map, but I must be doing something wrong because I can't seem to get them to work right.

Pepe, I don't think you idea will work, but I'll try it and see. I'm doing it on a cone, though, and you talk about doing it on a cylinder.

Conical...cylindrical....They kind of rhyme, right? :o
