So, after many starts and stops I have moved ahead with the interior launch bay for Yorktown. I had discussed various setups with Masao and had finally settled on this configuration, which includes a retrieval arm. The arm is a variation of the ISS construction arm.

This is fairly primitive in the details and will hopefully look so much better when I'm done :D.

I figured that the ships should be able to dock without a rig so the arm is for minor emergencies only. Masao and I have agreed that a crippled ship gets tossed and blown up.

Chuck it, just like they did back during WW2.

Looks good so far. More detail needed. Perhaps some hydraulics, pistons, etc...

Is that tunnel the only attachment for the Minotaur? Even though the bay is probably zero g, a Yorktown still probably goes through enough movements to make the Minotaurs rattle around a bit. If that's a tunnel, it's hollow and provides attachment strength only along its edge. Having a more extensive claw grabbing the top surface of the Minotaur could be relatively light weight but still be more secure.

Update!

I took Masao's advice and added another stabilizing attachment to hold the Minnies in place. They get maximum strength when all five are docked.

Also added a few details though hard to see and have put in missile chambers.

A few more details and now seen from inside the Yorktown. Starting to look 'busy' as a suitable hanger.

Forgive the lighting as this is a test and is not set up properly. There are not yet enogh internal lights, only three quick globals.

Ah, now it's coming together. Are you going to change the color of the bay lights?
Imagine if that gun went off right about now...oops!

That's looking cool. With hanger pictures, the details are not so important, since we should be focusing more on the ships. The background just needs to look busy and functional. Those spidery arms look good.

Are you going towards a reddish "red alert" type internal lighting, or something more yellow or whitish with a few hot points lights or what? I have no real preference, whatever looks neat.

I am trying to figure the lights now and having a heck of a time. I figure that most work in the bay is done inside of the ships and not outside - outside work would wait for spacedock. The lighting is problematic when the ships are docked in the cradles. Of course, I don't have the actual details of how this is done (hint - ;)).

I just adding a few more random details like storage bins, tanks and pipes.

Then I am going to see how it renders out!

Ooh!
That looks really nice!

I have always wondered what the york's must look like inside.

I second Masao's comments. Nice to see you here. I thought it was just Masao, Thomas, and I who post here. Please visit more often.

Here is another wip shot - still looking to do a lot more on textures and lightning. I added a lot more detail but it gets lost. I'll just have to lessen the number of docked ships, there are three inside in this pic.

Hey ya Hito!

Thomas, you're looking to me for details? I'm not so good with this nuts and bolts stuff. I'm a contour man!

For lighting. There're probably lights on the rotating part with the docking tunnels so that a constant light is shown on the top of each ship. Then there are probably lights on the inner surface of the Yorktown hull to illuminate the bottoms.

The number of ships you have now is fine.

A few ribs and pipes on the wall (I posted some links to pics of hangers and carriers a few weeks back for Skyhawk's Swordfish model). Maybe a sort of tram-track for missiles and other equipment.

Edit: Here's the thread with the links to pics: http://www.3dgladiators.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16958

Okay - rip away :D

I'm still trying to get it right and have a huge block on the lighting. Maybe stuffing and gravy will help! (And lots of brandy :D)

Some loose thoughts:

With that new angle, the back wall looks of the bay looks a bit dull, despite the markings. Are those supposed to be doors of some kind? I don't know, maybe you need some more greebles, tubing, little port-looking doodads, lights... Maybe some spotlights coming from the Yorktown to shine on the Minotaur? I think the look of light spilling from a brightly lit room into a darkened hallway might be good here. If this is launching (rather than recovery, putting another Mintaur ready to be released would help make it look busier. How about some rescue crews and pusher standing by?

Have some turkey and brandy for me! I'm at work, damn it!
