Ive finally got around to starting my next modeling project, and here it is, an early second generation camaro, a 71 to be exact.
This is what Ive got on the body after more than a couple hours messin with and getting used to NURMS.

And for those deprived souls who know nothing about classic muscle cars, a pic of what this thing will eventually look like

Well I know my muscle cars so I just had to comment.
This style is my second favorite Camaro (my favs are the 69 Z28 and the 69 ZL1).
I'm glad you chose the RS with the split bumper - it always looks better than the big ugly one piece bumper.
The model looks good so far.
I would suggest you break it down into smaller pieces instead of doing one big piece though.
One of these days I am going to do a 69 Z28 in 3D - right down to the last bolt.

On a side note I went to the car show here in Edmonton yesterday to look at new cars and to take some pictures of the local "Holy Grail" of muscle cars.
A guy here in Edmonton has a 1970 Plymouth Superbird (440 Six Pack car) - the only one ever built that is white with a white interior - with only 818 original miles on it.
The same guy owns a 1970 Dodge Charger RT - the only car that year shipped from the factory in panther pink.
It also has some kind of special racing suspension - again the only car that shipped that way that year.

Not much of an update here, it was sunday, which meant a race and a basketball game to watch(My team won again, #2 in the nation  ). Spent most of time I had messin with the body shape with not much to show for it. I started on the front headlights, but Im probably gonna end up redoing the lenses, but Im not sure yet.

After that basically pointless update, I couldnt leave it at that, so I got a little more done, and the headlights are much better now.

I think I am gonna build the headlights instead of texture them. Look for the new headlights with the next updates, but for now, heres some more work on the front end. Ive also created the front windshield and side windows. Anyways, enjoy.

very cool, coming together well. not sure on this, but compared to the ref picture it looks like the grill should be recessed a bit further? No big deal tho. It'll be sweet when done :)

I agree with seanp about your strategy. I think you'll find it easier to make all of the seams if you break up your box modeling into the various components instand of making it one big hinkin mesh -- but of course thats up to you

tgg7979
March 4th, 2003, 02:18 PM
Your right about the grille, JasonA, I moved it back this morning. Thanks for the comments, they are appreciated

tgg7979
March 4th, 2003, 11:24 PM
The headlights didnt get done today, I spent most of the day building the wheels and ATTEMPTING to build the tires, that and I redid the front grille. The inner hub and spokes texture isnt gonna change much but the outer rim texture is temporary till I can figure out how I want to do it.

Heres another round of updates. The main body is nearly complete, still no new headlights tho, tomorrow, hopefully. Whats left for the body is the rear window, the new headlights, front lower spoiler, rear deck spoiler, rear bumper, door handles, key holes, and emblem(s).

in a word, lookin sweeeeet. looks like you have a few owies around the windshield tho. The body is looking superb, those tires really fill it out. great work :)

tgg7979
March 6th, 2003, 09:34 AM
Yeah, the windshield, someone at sfm mentioned that too. I cant find any errors right there, and the problem apperas to be with the shadows and go completely away with a texture on there, so, I think everythings ok.

seanr
March 6th, 2003, 10:40 AM
The edges seem kind of rubbery (not smooth and crisp, too rounded and not well defined).

tgg7979
March 6th, 2003, 11:17 AM
Are you talking about the windshield Seanr? The edges are sharp, they were extruded righgt out of the polys of the body. I cant figure out whats casuing the errors, especially since Im usin Brazil's GI. I really think they are shadow errors, take a look a few posts back up, the errors arent there in those wips and I havent touched the windshield since then.

Well, things have not gone excactly as I had hoped when redoing the body. This project is not dead.

Hopefully and thats a big HOPEFULLY I'll have some updates tonite, even if its just the new body up to the point where I restarted the old one.

No, not the windshield, I mean the entire body. The whole thing is excessively smoothed (and not quite cleanly, either, it looks a little lumpy almost).

tgg7979
March 10th, 2003, 01:17 PM
Id say Ive pretty much fixed all the lumpiness with the new body, it looks much better now. All far as overall too smooth, I dont know, I like the way it looks besides the aforementioned lumpiness. I think once i get everything on there the way it should be, itll look fine

Heres the latest round of wip pics. I added the front and rear windshields and side windows. The trim pieces around them are not done yet, I still have to go through and chamfer all the edges. Now shes really starting to look like a car.

Just don't forget to to model the inside of the wheel wells - you can still see through them to the tires on the other side of the car.

Its Back! Like the fabled Phoenix, she arises. Not much, but here is an update, started modeling the interior, and added seats and worked on the glass settings to get rid of the funky mirror effect. Its kinda weird, Im at a LAN party and get more modeling done than I have in weeks.

Well folks, she is a goner, I had to reformat because of several problems and in my haste to hurry and finish the reformat, I deleted max and all the meshes within my max 5 folder. I might eventually attempt to do the mesh again, but not now.

Looks really great!

I've owned two camaros, though not this little hugger, and I've always liked the Rally Sport design. I had a friend that owned one but her car was the latter version with the single bumper. I always envied her with that car, and she treated it so bad. She would leave it on the street with the windows down at night!

The two minor things that bother me about this mesh is that the corners of the front grill are sharp angles. It should be a smooth curvy corner. And the hood area goes right up to the window. It shouldn't far as I remember. There was this approx. 6 inch wide strip between the windshield and hood. It wouldn't have the big center mound of the hood. It had windshield wipers attached to it and a grill on each side.

:D

Ok, I need your guys help. First, Im back to where I was when I thought Id lost this thing. Should I go on and build a full chassis and engine for it, or just get the interior done, and call it done.

Second, Ive been messing around with some HDRI renderings, and I cant get it right to save my life. So if u guys got any suggestions, Id love to hear em. Heres what I got so far.

As cool as it would be to be able to peek under the hood, I think you'd be fine just finishing off the interior. (And don't forget the mirrors.)

Damn this is nice... :)

April 28th, 2003, 01:32 AM
Well, thanks to Viper, I got the HDRI issues sorted out. These images however, arent rendered with it, these are just playing around images, trying out different colors. These also use the Brazil Auto Paint material, which looks MUCH better. Anyway, here you go, lemme know what colors u like for when I finish this thing. Thanks Viper

Well, I started on some more stuff for this thing, like the license plate area and rear bumper, which I had forgotten about. The bumper is still a WIP, its turned out to be a pain to get right.
I went ahead and rendered in a couple different colors, the green was a recommendation from Psycho Path, I like it.

Is that where the stereo really goes? It seems rather inconvenient with the gearshift blocking it.

tgg7979
May 18th, 2003, 02:21 PM
The interior of this thing isnt gonna be a recreation of the original, its gonna be more a customized interior. But yeah, the original stereo sat in pretty much the same position, albeit a little farther back. I also know thats where the stereo is in my 91 camaro. Its not hard at all to get too, as long as your in 2nd, 4th, or reverse gears.
