LOS ANGELES - Security experts have sounded the alarm over fears the Conficker computer worm could trigger Internet havoc on April Fools' Day. Others are saying it's just a case of mass hysteria fueled by the media.
Fact is... no one knows for sure what will happen on Wednesday. Computer experts are issuing a warning about the Conficker worm, a bug that so far has infected at least 3 million PCs. Tech experts say many of the infected machines are set to begin "phoning home" to the worm's creators over the Internet on April 1. When that happens, the people behind it will be able to get the rogue program to send spam, more viruses, clog network traffic or even crash Web sites.
Don't panic just yet, though. Researchers who have been keeping tabs on Conficker say April Fools will probably come and go quietly, as least on the computing front.

I always wear a condom when I use my computer.
So far, I haven't caught a virus from it.

Honestly, I don't know why people have so many problems and get so scared over viruses. I've only ever had one problem with viruses and that was my fault for being stupid (I downloaded the friggin' thing.) So, don't be stupid and download anything that you don't know what it is and you shouldn't have any friggin' viruses on your PC. It's not exactly rocket science, people.

Well said EG180.. But I thought I would inform people .... apart from Fretslayer who takes careful to a whole new level :) :) :)

Yeah, I just watched the news earlier and they said that the worm is mostly targeting businesses (no surprise there.) Hackers typically don't go after home PC users because it's just not worth it, they like to hit big networked systems. They do, however, like to put those viruses out there for people to download or they like to e-mail them, so everybody needs to be ever vigilant for that sort of thing. Though, it sounds like they laid this thing out there a while back and it was time coded to start today, so if you don't already have it, you're probably not going to get it.

Of course, I really don't worry too much about viruses designed to steal personal information because I don't keep any on my PC. (besides, nobody wants to steal my identity and acquire all of my debt anyway) Most of what I have on my PC is meshes, images and games. ;)

I used to work for the national help desk for a large cable modem ISP and I'll tell ya, there are people who you would think would know better when it comes to opening an infected email/file/website - but they don't.

I've had people from kids to the CEO of a major computer manufacturer (legally I can't say who he is) call the help desk I worked at and ask for assistance in cleaning their P.C.

All of my family and friends are highly aware of the whole virus thing but for some reason my sister (who is a school teacher!) still catches every bug that flies past.

It's crazy. LOL!

It's always good to have a heads up though - regardless of how careful you are.

The worst ones are the ones on servers that you don't even know exist and all you've done is gone to a legit website on an infected server. My sister (back when she had a dial-up connection) went to a Disney website and the server it was hosted on installed a 'dialer' on her machine that disconnected her from her ISP and rerouted her call through Borneo and then back to her ISP. She got a $2,000 phone bill!
Needless to say (so why the H3ll am I saying it then?! LOL) I called the phone company got the bill dropped down to $2.00 - Really.

But I guess I'm just trying to say that even people who are careful can still catch something.

(insert bar-fly joke here)

Good to see you around Fretslayer

Thanks man.
I was away busy for quite a while as I was working on a film.
But after several conversations with the director regarding the CG effects I finally told him to go eat a d*ck.

So that means I'll have plenty of time to burn hanging around this place and making a pain out of myself.
LOL!

After having done much freelance computer troubleshooting, and in-home service calls, I can honestly say...the vast majority of people just aren't that smart. There is an entire generation of computer users now that are just as mystified by it's functioning (it's magic like a tv) as they are by their car. They have no concept of safe computing, or security, and no desire to learn even the most basic internet survival skills - like firewalls and antivirus. They love to click shiney buttons, and hit OK on anything that remotely looks like it could be an official download or update. They get bogged down with every IE toolbar out there, most with redundant features that conflict with each other, and will simply disable any security programs that require any sort of configuration on their part, because they can't download their porn or play those annoying AOL games.
I wish this weren't true...but...

And don't forget the people who think 'Hey, I'm sure this $10,000 piece of software I got from a warez site is safe. I'll just run the KeyGen and cross my fingers'.

I've cleaned more computers because of porn infections (I know, what an awful pun!) and infections caused by... uh, shall we say 'borrowed' software.

Here's what I think is funny; all these people were all worried about this stupid Conficker virus and it didn't even do anything on April 1st. Now, I don't like April Fools Day, in fact I absolutely hate it and the stupid jokes that accompany it. And I certainly don't like virus threats, especially for nothing. But I think it's funny that a bunch of morons were all worried about this thing and it didn't even do anything (kinda like the whole Y2K thing.)
