View Full Version : Any and All 'Cage' references...

Regarding the ship model, there are plenty of great images of the Enterprise as she existed in "The Cage" and "Where No Man Has Gone Before" at the Starship Builder's Guide (http://www.starshipbuilder.com/). I think the site is tougher to get around in than it was in its previous incarnation, but on the bright side, it has been upgraded with some DVD screen captures, so the resolution is a lot better than it used to be.

A couple of other good ones are CultTVMan's "Modeling the Original TV Enterprise" page (http://www.culttvman.com/modelingtosenterprise.html), which is intended for plastic modellers, but has some very good reference material, and the IDIC Page (http://members.aol.com/idicpage/main.html).

A couple of screen captures showing interiors and characters for the first pilot are at http://stinsv.com/TOS/tospcat2.htm; just search for "Cage" and they're easy enough to find.

There's also a very small amount of material in "The Art of Star Trek". Unfortunately, my scanner is on the fritz; it produces extremely blurry images at the moment, else I'd scan some for you. http://www.3dgladiators.net/forums/ubb/ubbhtml/frown.gif

Of course, since "The Menagerie" is available on DVD (and VHS), that's probably your best bet. ;-)

Thanks, Jeff; that's a big help. Saw your interior 'J'-class bridge; looking good, though navigating around that captain's chair might be a bit of a pain http://www.3dgladiators.net/forums/ubb/ubbhtml/wink.gif

I wonder what the 'J'-class would look like?
Any thoughts? It's from the era of my project, so it's of interest to me.

Well, I realised I needed at least the outline of a J-class vessel for the wall and engineering displays. Star Trek: The Magazine did a spread on Matt Jefferies' original series of designs for the Enterprise (well, originally the Yorktown), so I chose a design that he drew after the one which eventually became the Dædalus -- very similar to the final version of the Enterprise, but the nacelles were on very short, thick pylons attached to the primary hull, and the details of the secondary hull were quite a bit different.

And, yeah, I know, the captain's chair looks like it's too far back; but I think I've hit upon a means of fixing it.

I look forward to seeing it. What was different about the secondary hull, if you don't mind? I've seen a 'nacelles-on-the-primary-with-engineering-hull' confugiration, but it was basically the standard kitbash.

Well, the front of the secondary hull isn't shown clearly, but it looks like it might simply be rounded. It looks more or less cylindrical; at the aft end, there's about a 45° chamfer down to about 2/3 the main diameter, a very short straight segment, then a rounded endcap. He depicted it both upside down and right-side-up; the former has its charms, but it just looks wrong.

Regarding the upside-down arrangement, I once had a model of the Potempkin break on accident and decided to reassemble it with the entire engineering section (with engines and neck) flipped over and glue to the top of the saucer. I rather liked the way it turned out. If you look through my temp folder, you'll find a drawing of an excelisor rearranged in the same fashion, though I didn't like that design quite as much.

Images, production sketches, anything like that. Screen caps of the different rooms, of how the Enterprise looked, makeup tests, etc. Thanks a bunch.

Thanks for the great links, Jeff (though it's a little daunting, all the different, miss-matched schematics for the TOS enterprise...)

I did up some quick sketches of a possible uniform, based on The Cage, and another of my 5-Hour-Wonders, the Cage version Enterprise, sans textures. Still looking for interior references (though I found a nice sample of bridge lighting and color schemes). Anyway, here are the pics.

The project I'm doing is storyboarding and animating a scene from the Pre-TOS novel, Final Frontier, by Diane Carey (Pocket Books, 1988). I takes place some 15 years before Kirk takes over the Enterprise, on it's first, unofficial mission. It's an interesting period to me given the way the book portrays the Federation and the sudden leap in technology, idealism and galactic responsiblity "The Emperess" (they don't actually name her until the end of the novel) represents to the characters and time period. And it's got romulans and space battles and new/old technology. Basically, if you're going to go back in time for Series V, it's a nice premise, and it takes place on the Enterprise.

I'll be using it as a portion of my demo reel, along with some other animated clips.

Looks like that'll be something to see!

Sorry I can't give any better references on the bridge. If I had a DVD drive, I'd pull off some screencaps for you. (Hmmm... buy a drive, or pay the bills? Nah, I guess the drive won't do me much good if I don't have the electricity to use it.)

But I would appreciate the sacrifice http://www.3dgladiators.net/forums/ubb/ubbhtml/wink.gif

Doing the textures for this is kind of fun; since the starship didn't have any of the decals, call letters, name, etc, that the standard model would later have, I kind of have to interpolate what an "unfinished" ship would look like. The bridge is described as unpainted, and in some sections, incomplete, with holes and gaps in the counters where later technology would be put in. Sound kind of fun to play with...

You know what I have yet to see? is an overhead shot of the bridge with scale refferences... or just an overhead shot or drawing...

Boy, just found some clear images of the stern; the schems I used for the hanger were *way* off. I'll have to do that again.
