LOL! Its a texture map (two actually, one as the bump map, and another as the transparency map). The texture was created by rendering a top view in trueSpace of black cylindars arranged over a black background, then brought into Photoshop and cropped.

This scene is now up on the repo FTP site at /seanr/tholian.zip (156KB; contains both the Tholian web spinner and Aurora and associated textures).
