3d Modeling Program of Choice

Simply as it says. What programs do you use, and which do you like the best?

Personally, I'm trained in Maya and find Lightwave's GUI to be a nightmare.

skyhawk223 September 9th, 2005 10:18 AM

I use trueSpace 6.6. I played with evaluation versions of Lightwave and 3d Studio Max, but have not given serious consideration to those apps due to cost.

Santee September 11th, 2005 02:19 PM

I am a child of Lightwave . . . I started with Inspire 3d ( Lightwave beginner version) back in 1998, and graduated to lightwave in 2000 . . .
I have seen most of the other 3d platforms, I guess LW just seems more intuitive to me, for me

I've been using Ray Dream Studio, mainly because I can't afford anything higher-end. Someday though....

I also have used Bryce for crude throw-together props.

Boy, that graphic sure took me down memory lane! I used to watch The Invaders on TV when I was a kid, and I even had the model. I see the model is still available to buy but at hugely inflated prices.

Thanks for teh smile.

Poser Version 6 is my program of choice.

rnlobo September 27th, 2005 09:09 PM

Tools

I have Bryce, Poser, C4d, Lightwave, Blender and others, but my tool of choice simply for simplicity is Anim8or...And it also is free...

Semadar October 8th, 2005 07:25 AM

Well 3dmax becouse i found more tutorial for this one and vue 5 is very easy and powerful
i try to move at lightwave but is a litte difficult or i mean different...
oop! right daz studio of course... :smirky:

clownsmighteatme October 11th, 2005 10:14 AM

I have Bryce and Poser, and am playing around with Ray Dream Studio and Wings. I still haven't made the leap to Poser 6 because version 5 still suits my needs. I haven't heard a whole lot of difference in the two that would justify the $100 upgrade.

captdsulu October 14th, 2005 06:41 PM

Well

As a beginner I'm using Daz. I have a very old copy of lightwave but never really learned how to use it.

orcdoc October 17th, 2005 02:49 PM

Lightwave for simple modelling and text, Maya for more advanced modelling.

Markus_2000 October 27th, 2005 06:52 PM

Bryce, Poser and 3DSMAX

wollyka October 29th, 2005 05:35 AM

LW 8.5 for now
Modo 201 seems excellent but i am waiting for a demo to see it

Blender 3D

Blender 3D! I have found it to be a very handy little thing to have around if you don't happen to have a $300,000/year job, or a penchant for illegal downloading.

I've had the privilege of using top-of-the-line software, like Maya, and have to say that Blender can do all of those things (or most of them), but you have to push a hundred more buttons to do it. In Maya, you grab a brush and start painting whatever you want. You want a forest of trees? Slap it in there with a few masterful strokes of the mouse!

But Blender was my first program, and though I've tried to use 3DS Max and Maya, it's just not the same as the first woman you learn to love. :)

It's pays to take Blender seriously. You keep your wallet, and you don't end up in the slammer with "Smasher" standing next to you in the shower.

Anything that can be Modeled in Maya, can be modeled it in Lightwave.
Just a thought

I´m using Max R5.1 and R8 and recently I started playing around with Poser 6.

vorta03 November 21st, 2005 02:09 PM

I am using Daz Studio...Vue...and working with lightwave, but I really don't like the modeler in LW seems overly complicated for what it does...am try the eval copy of 3ds for modeling.

Blender for modeling, Poser for scene setup, Povray for rendering.

cts December 25th, 2005 04:55 PM

Poser six, though DazStudio is showing some promise.

Akab December 27th, 2005 10:38 AM

3D Studio Max e Poser 6 are my workhorse.... ;)

Maybe for my skill... WorkPony :)

I'm working on my skill... but is a harsh path... to reach the standard level ( :) )

skyhawk223 December 29th, 2005 05:36 AM

Yes, it takes much time and effort.

Akab December 29th, 2005 03:59 PM

Yes.... I Know ;)

Much Time... and many many effort.
Poser manual is not very exaustive in many valuble axpect...
And too much is leave to student experiment.

If only we can work in Virtual-reality enviroment... all will speed-up to Warp 9.95 ;)

Interesting to see so many different opinions. Many moons ago I started out with Ray dream designer, then got so hooked I bought Ray Dream studio. I couldn't afford anything else for a few years. During that time every 3D magazine I looked at had the most amazing lightwave images. I finally got lightwave on ebay several years ago. before that, I tried out Max v.3 and hated it, ( obviously others love it ). I found Max to be way too cryptic. I had to jump through too many hoops just to do something simple.
Different strokes for different folks.
Currently I'm using Lightwave 8.5 and LOVING IT! I use Painter 8 and Photoshop 7 for textures. Adobe after affects for compositing.

melamkish January 7th, 2006 06:17 PM

Well, I'm new to all of this, so haven't done much yet. Have built the following arsenal to get started.
Poser 6
Bryce 5.5c
Daz Studio
Photoshop 8
TurboCAD 11.2 (actually have used this for years for non modeling)
gmax

VidFX January 8th, 2006 01:14 PM

Well; I started with Extreme 3D, then Strata Vision, Strata Studio Pro, Cinema 4DXL. never could quite get on with LW, but I do want to know how to make such detailed models with so few Polys, as the LW models I have seen around here.

stephanb2006 January 14th, 2006 11:27 PM

I use 3D stuido Max 7.0
Got to love student discounts!!!

Kaernen February 2nd, 2006 09:26 AM

I'm just starting out doing 3D stuff so I'm still using DAZ studio. So far I'm quite pleased with it.

SithLordCrow February 3rd, 2006 04:37 AM

Bryce, Poser, Photoshop and fireworks and my partner uses Truespace.

blackaxe February 12th, 2006 04:59 PM

I use Poser Artist because I'm poor
