U.S.S. Hook

Well, I've popped out yet another ship. This one is the U.S.S. Hook, a Fed. Cruiser. Although it doesn't have any textures I think it came out good. So here's a couple of shots of the U.S.S. Hook.

Wow! What am I doing here? This stuff rocks. My stuff blows. http://www.startrek-forums.com/gladi...lies/smile.gifAnyone know of a cheap decent 3D package that I can replace my piece of crap program with? I can't get anywhere near this with what I have. http://www.startrek-forums.com/gladi...lies/smile.gif

Minosh, please get it textured! http://www.startrek-forums.com/gladi...lies/smile.gif

Fifthrate, I'm not gona high-jack the thread, but will say this- Why you are here is because you were invited, because you have an interesting TOS ship design, and we aim to help bring out more from you.

As for program- Practice practice practice.

That's what we all do.

As for program- Lemme tell you about skyhawk- He used POV Ray and Moray! And *he's* still here! http://www.startrek-forums.com/gladi...es/biggrin.gif

Heck yeah! I wouldn't miss this stuff for the world!

Fifthrate, what app is it that you are using?
Are you using POV RAY and MORAY? If so, I will be glad to lend any assistance.
I must tell you, however, that I no longer use those apps since I bought trueSpace a few months ago.

Don't worry about being overshadowed by others. I feel the same way. So for now I don't try to outdo anyone. I stick to the simpler concepts and try to make those look the best I can. Along the way, as my skills progress, I move on to more complex areas. Besides, your Klingon ships blows away (pun intended) anything I have made so far.

Thanks for the comments, and Fifthrate, your stuff is really good, I think your doing a great job. Keep up the good work !!

Warrior DL I would have textured it, but I really don't have anything that looks go on it. I'm still very fuzzy on what kind of textures go on a Fed ship of this era. To me all the pictures ( and models I have) smooth hulls. So any help from anyone would be appreciated.

Would you mind if I asked how much trueSpace cost and where to get it? I really want to get something better than I have (RayDream 3D). I can't even do boolean subtractions with my current setup. I'm limited to the rough looking models you've seen so far.

Well, I've textured the Hook, let me know what you all think.

I think the nacelle pylon and the ventral arm with the torp launcher (or phaser pod?) and deflector shouldn't have such sharp-cornered rectangular cross-sections. Instead, the nacelle supported should be a rounded rectangle, and the ventral arm might look better with a cross section more like the neck of TOS Enterprise, more tapered at the front and back. Also, put a few windows on the ventral arm. It's a promising design!

meshula October 20th, 2000 08:08 PM

What Masao said... Plus I'd like to add try to break up the texturing a bit or create custom textures for each object. It destroys the illusion a little if the whole thing is uniformly textured the same way.

BTW, I use animation master from www.hash.com which you can get for $199 to $299 depending on if you can find it on sale somewhere like www.dvdirect.com. I think my stuff comes out all right for such an inexpensive package, plus it's really good for TOS stuff because it uses Bezier patches instead of polygons.

Here's an update on the U.S.S. Hook.

Ah! The model is now a thousand times better!

Also since no one else asked - is the first render at the top of the page a scene from Space 1999 with Hook time travelling back to watch the moon zip behind a curiously small Jupiter??? http://www.startrek-forums.com/gladi...ilies/wink.gif I did get a chuckle from it, anyway.

Eric's D-7??? AAAUUUGGGHHH!!!!!! http://www.startrek-forums.com/gladi...es/biggrin.gif

Nick's right- Looks MUCH better! ('cept that D-7! heh heh)

I agree, it's much better. I few windows on the ventral arm might help too. But now I'm getting Return of the Jedi flashbacks: it sort of reminds me of a b-wing fighter!

skyhawk223 October 23rd, 2000 02:43 AM

FAdmMinosh: I got tS 4.3 for $300, but they had an Independence Day special. You need to check their web page around holidays for these specials. Go to www.caligari.com. The have a promotion going on now for $400 with includes tS 4.3 along with textures, shaders, and other apps that would come in handy.

FAdmMinosh October 26th, 2000 08:37 PM

Well, did I forget about the Hook? I don't think sooooo. http://www.startrek-forums.com/gladi...lies/smile.gif Actually I found a better drawing of it (here as a matter of fact, which nobody mentioned, http://www.startrek-forums.com/gladi...lies/smile.gif) Anyways here's version two, with some slight modification. Also I broke up the textures and changed some of the bump maps around, plus put in the windows on the weapon pylon everyone was asking for. Unless anyone else has something on it, I think I'll call it done. In this picture another poor Romulan BOP is getting pounded on (it's my favorite target, thanks for the mesh/target Warrior! http://www.startrek-forums.com/gladi...lies/smile.gif)

Hey! Where'd that second nacelle come from?

FAdmMinosh October 28th, 2000 01:45 PM

Well, the second nacelle was one of the 'Updates' I did. I was working off of a single side picture which was a side shot of the ship. When I found another sketch of this type of ship, to my surprise I found it had a second nacelle which in a side view lines right up behind the other one, so that's why I didn't see it before. I think it looks a little bit more balanced with two. But what does everyone else think? One or Two nacelles? As for the phasers, they're much to fat, I agree. I've got a better way to do them but since it about 5 times harder to set-up and I really just wanted to show the ship off, I didn't do it. I've actually regretted placing it in the scene section, because it really turned into a modeling section post.

I agree with Darrell, i think you got 2 interesting ships there

skyhawk223 October 28th, 2000 10:25 PM

Much better with the windows. I like the pic, except for the phasers.
