WHAT? No mention of The Martian Chronicals? Or The Illustrated Man? Farenheight 451? Let's give Ray Bradbury some credit here. Stephen King too, although he is more horrer than sci-fi, he did write Firestarter.

I'm glad someone here mentioned Koontz and Bova. Mr. Murder, Dragon Tears, and Strangers should be required reading as examples of how to tell a story and portray characters' personalities. Bova's entire Orion series is also increadibly inventive. There was another he did I really liked but I can't remember the name of it.
