Yeah, typically, pilots wouldn't be used as infantry. My guess would be that they didn't want to have the characters doing the same thing every week. Giving them more responsibilities than just being stick jockeys kept the show from falling into a routine where they just go out in their ships every episode and fight/shoot stuff.
