The actor appeared in more than 150 films and television shows, including Doctor Who, The Saint and The Avengers during his six-decade acting career.

He recently voiced characters in Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland and The Corpse Bride and appeared in Burton's Sleepy Hollow.

But he remains best remembered for his role as Alfred Pennyworth opposite three different Batmans: Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney.

He died in the early hours of Thursday at home in England with his family, his ex-wife Anneke Wills said through her agent.

Wills, Doctor Who's first female "sidekick", said in an obituary posted on her website: "As his body was deteriorating this week, he said that he wanted to hang on for St Patrick's Day. And he did, just. In the end... there is only love."

Born in Kuala Lumpur, Gough's first screen acting appearance was in Androcles And The Lion in 1946.

He made many appearances in Hammer horror films including 1958's Dracula, starring Christopher Lee.

Other notable Hollywood credits included The Boys From Brazil, Out Of Africa and The Age Of Innocence.

Gough appeared in Doctor Who in the 1960s opposite William Hartnell and later in the 1980s with the fifth Doctor, Peter Davison.

Other notable TV appearances included roles in The Champions, Colditz and Blake's 7.
