It depends. I spent years working on starship building and very little time on making planets. I know other 3D modelers that are that way. I can create a planet in trueSpace (which kinda sucks a planet textures to begin with and that doesn't help) that will look all right from certain distances but I like close images of planets for orbital scenes. (which is why I usually cheat and use LunarCell in Gimp.
