how to add things....

Im do no know Photoshop very good, so I have a question.
How can I add rust and dirt to an image to let a texture looking more real(In photoshop 6)?

I cant see a difference between the pics, they are dark. But can you please explain exactly how you do it?

lol, sorry to confuse you, borg.

it started out as no texture at all. the pic just shows two steps of the whole progress.

so basically i drew everything you can see

step one:

i renderd a 2d view of the object to be textured.

step two:

i took this into PS and there painted on the rendering what detail i wanted.
rust for example

step 3:

i textured it onto the object
