MAX 4.2 render problem

Odd video post error in MAX 4.26 (and with 4.2 prior to SP). When I put a background image in the environment area it won't render but errors with a MAX version of a GPF. The image works fine in the basic renderer just not VP. Oddly, it works in any MAX tutorial mesh just not ones I have created. It happens on two different machines, both running W2K Pro with SP2. One has a PIII 866MHz with 512MB RAM and a 4GB swap file, the other on a P4 1.8GHz with 1GB RAM and a 10GB swap.

I had seen a vaguely similar issue on the discreet boards that says delete objects that might 'offend' (!?).

Well get 3D Exploration...model in 3DSM then render and stuff in LW. I love LW.
