3 D CGI Terragen-Stuff by ulimann644

I´ve re-installed Terragen a few weeks ago and updated it.
Since the begin of this month I create my first Terragen-Pics. It´s not special yet (but I hope it will someday).

This was one of my first scenes. My primary goal by creating it was to see how to use the fake-rock-node and adding the planet.

After it, I´ve made this (little bit) more complex scene.

Actual I´m testing how to include backgrounds, making planetary rings and different planetary effects.

This is my newest pic with Terragen.

In the end I´ll use most of the scenes for my WIKI and for covers like this one.

Today I´ve worked on a basic space-scene. I´m not 100% happy with the rocks in front but I´ll fix it the next days. This scene is my "Proving-Ground", where I test new effects. I´ll also try to use a texture for coloring the planet-rings.

When you say that about the rocks, are you referring to the flat tops of them?

Yes - that´s an effect that I haven´t planned for it.

The tricky thing is: I´ve made the Mountain at the right side with "World Machine", saved the Heightmaps of the mountain and used it for this mountain (with a bunch of nodes). So it´s impossible to add the node for the rocks where it is standard in the Prg. Because in this case the parameters for the rocks overwrite the parameters for the mountain-nodes.

I´ve found a way to add it at an other position, where the rock-node-parameters didn´t overwrite the mountain-node parameters, but it has some unexpected effects on the rocks. I´m sure to find out what´s actual going wrong the next days (or weeks).

[EDIT]

Okay - I´ve laughed about my own stupidity five minutes long.
Because it was just one click to fix the problem.

I´ve just begun.
This is another basic scene. I´ll work on it the next time and add some trees, bushes and maybe a building that I plan to make with LW.

The first step was to control the colors of different map-heights with the node-parameters and to add a valley that I´ve made with "World Machine".

That´s a good question. I´ve tried to render (a VERY simple scene with VERY low detail-level) by a resolution of 16000x9000 and this resolution is no problem for Terragen.

For exaple: This little scene was rendered by Terragen with a high detail-grade and a resolution of 1280x720 in 24 Minutes. In Full HD and a higher detail-grade Terragen needs less than 2 hours. (But it´s possible that Terragen needs for a scene with visible sun-rays or for a misty forest with a very high detail-grade nearly one day in HD.

BTW: I´ve added more ground-layers and a few plants and I´ve made changes by the parameters for the clouds and the rocks.

I'm gonna guess you have a fairly high-end computer. Those render times sound like they'd absolutely kill my PC

I´ve added a dozen more nodes for the mountain-surface and like how it changes. The next step is to optimize the parameters for it.

I´m working on it.

Here is is a new version of the planet-surface scene. I´ve deleted the stones and added a few layers to simulate a cracked surface.

...hmmm

Is that wisps of dust or a fog?

Coloring doesn't match for a dust, given the color of the terrain, and there is obviously no moister for it to be a fog.

Your right.
I´ve changed the color for the dust and added a bitmap for the planetary rings.

Any way to combine the two versions of the rings? I like the basics of the one right before this one (given how close the planet is, little detail should be somewhat visible), but also love the coloring of the last one.

I think it´s possible to combine it.
I like the rings with the Saturn-like rings a little more. For this nearly final version I´ve added five more rings and it´s shadows on the planet.

Just my taste, but I like the previous one better, just before you added more rings.

I like it with more gaps. Different tastes.

I´ve worked a little more on the mountains in this scene. Still not what I like to have in the end. Actually I´m going mad by testing all this different TERRAGEN node-parameters...

Well, I literally live in an area like that, and what I see missing is some snow on the tops of the mountains. So maybe that's it?

And of course you like more rings - You made the scene, added them and posted it

I´ve had some snow at earlier versions of this scene. Too much sun yesterday, I guess.
Okay the snow is back and now I also like the surface of the rocks.

It starts as a simple test to make better rocks and ended as a complete space-scene.
Okay...

That looks real good.

Off subject to the art part, but a question about the geological part of it - What caused the rocks on the water area to be worn in that particular angle? (Just curious on any back-story you might have for that type of formation)

It´s a consequence of a VERY high value for the "Displacement Amplitude" of the Rocks. It was unexpected but i like it.
