In fairness, what I changed wasn't that major. I've been remastering the exterior shots. Basically, I'm doing what the actual visual effects teams did when they were still working with physical models: one pass is the physical ship, another is the windows, another is the warp engines, and so on, and then they're all matted in together. This does make shots more elaborate, but it also allows me to manipulate each layer individually. Look closely and you'll notice now that the windows on the Fitzgerald all have a "glow" to them instead of just appearing to be lit from within, as will the warp nacelles.

Also, the lighting on the "physical" layer is improved now. Before, those shots all had one key light, and very "flat" fill lighting, you didn't get much detail on the hulls of ships. Now, I've changed it so that the fill lighting is less "flat" in appearance, and you actually get some texture on the hulls (they look more "shiny" and metallic now).

It's subtle, but there if you know what to look for. To me, it's like night and day, but then again I've been staring at these things for so long it's hard for it not to leap out. There are a few scenes where you have old and new right next to each other--take a look 90 minutes in, for instance, when Drakus goes out to examine his fleet. The first Warbird he sees when he drops out of warp is now rendered in the "new" style, while the next shot when he flies over the same ship looks very different. To me, the first shot looks orders of magnitude better.

Wow, I'm impressed. That sounds like a massive amount of work. FX houses have teams of people who work on that stuff, but if I'm not mistaken, you are doing this all on your own, all the more impressive.

I'm so glad you found some time to work on this before your big move.

Yeah, he's doing it all himself. Everything. That's the main reason I've been so impressed with this project since I first started paying attention to it and watched Specter.

I think this is going to be the last scene I post for a while, we'll see how things develop over the next few weeks.

Just a headsup guys, I'm soon going to be posting another long clip, but even if you've been keeping up you'll want to see this--remember how I mentioned I'm redoing most of the visuals for the movie?...well that effort has finally become visible in a pronounced way.

There are several "weak" spots in Retribution, one of which is Scene 23, "Escape from New Romulus," which begins about 56 minutes into the movie. The original visuals I made for this scene were, admittedly, made under a significant time crunch, and so they look cheesy--and that's putting it nicely.

No longer. I've finally taken time to go through and make the visuals there a lot more compelling (at least I think they are) than the old ones. In a rare move, I'm going to leave the previous cut--which still uses the old visuals--up for you to compare if you want to. To me, the scene works a LOT better now with the revised visuals (the one static shot of the three Warbirds firing on the fleeing scout ship was particularly atrocious). Comparing those old shots with the new ones will also give you some idea as to how the visuals of the Fitzgerald have changed.

Expect to see that sometime in the next 12 hours.

Alright, folks, looks like we're in luck--I've managed to find just a little time before I leave to work on Retribution. The all-important Scene 52--the climax--is being penned right now, and since there isn't much time to get it made, I'd like to get input from you guys on what I have. Parts of it are half-baked, and and I know some of the dialogue needs work, but I figured I'd see if anyone here would be willing to take a look and help me make refinements?

We still seem to be having attachment problems, so if you're interested let me know and I'll find a way to get the DOC to you.

Well, no one ever got back to me regarding my request for feedback...but nevertheless I think I've managed to put together an ending we can all live with. It's got a wonderful (if a bit cliche-ridden) showdown between heroes and villain, a last-minute plot twist, and an ending that I think is very heartwarming...

Spoiler
...followed by a BIG plot twist.

As soon as the attachments function starts working again, I'll post the scene writeups in full for all to see, in case you want to have the ending spoiled or just want to contribute a onceover.

It's probably something internal, which Darrell will have to look into. It's probably not an easy fix, since he hasn't fixed it yet.

Alright, in lieu of posting the writeup of the last few scenes (which are shaping up to be pretty neat, I think), I'm going to ask just one question of all you loyal viewers:

Spoiler
The ending of Retribution as I've written it most definitely leaves open the possibility of a third film, Back to the Future-style. My question is, do you guys enjoy these characters enough to return to see them for a third installment?

Also, a little spoilage for something neat coming up in the next few scenes:

Spoiler
When last we left our heroes, the Romulan and Federation fleets were engaged in The Final Confrontation, the odds were against them and the situation was grim. The tide is going to turn very soon, the Iron Vulture (played by the USS Event Horizon) will fall under attack, and it won't be long before the ISS Voyager shows itself, and everyone in sight will turn their weapons on it, even as it tries to destroy Captain Prentice's fleeing shuttlecraft.

This is going to mean some more neat battle shots. I can also promise that the Prometheus will be using its Multi-Vector Assault capability.

And, if you want to know what The Ultimate Climax will be, it's just two words long:

Spoiler
RONSTON: "Ramming speed!"

Just a few thoughts:

I would like to see some new characters and ship, not that I don´t enjoy this crew, but a new crew would be interesting.

Perhaps a smaller ship, Excelsior Class perhaps or smaller again Nova ?,

Story could be general exploration story rather than the big story affair.

You could come back to a third instalment later

So, does that mean the fugly Galaxy-class dreadnought is going to be destroyed? That would be awesome. (sorry, I hate that variation of the class)

What do you mean, "if" there's a third film?

Seriously, while I don't care for the ship model for the Fitzgerald, I do enjoy your films. You have a great talent for this kind of work. I'm looking forward to seeing how you end Retribution. And, if you do a third film, I'll certainly watch it.

I am with Chris in this, I am a traditionalist and I like the twin warp nacelle ship layout over anything else, the elegant Galaxy Class design became cluttered with the 3rd nacelle been added to the design.
Just a personal observation but nothing to do with your film making which is very interesting and fun to watch, and like Chris would certainly watch another instalment.
As your work is the only story telling I know of, set in the original Trek universe I know off.
Spoiler
But again I would like to see a more traditional Trek story over the (as I said Big Affair story), Exploring a planet and getting into some adventure of some kind?. what that could be I have no idea. But I would love to see some new characters new Captain to get to know

Personally I would love to see a third film sometime in the future as I really enjoy your movies. Weather or not it contains this crew and ship is up to you. I like this bunch, but if you move forward in time again then perhaps cycle out a few of the crew for new faces. As for the ship, keep it as is, refit it, or replace it with a newer class depending on how you plan on ending this film and how far ahead the next one is set. Personally I'm a fan of the Galaxy class and love seeing it in action. If you do eventually decide to replace it, then I would vote for something "post Galaxy/Sovereign".

Regardless of what happens in the future, I just want to say Thank You for making both these films. You've provided me with countless hours of entertainment since the beginning of Spectre.

I am a fan of the Galaxy class myself and the Sovereign if it comes to that.

but there is something to be said for a smaller ship design and class... I name the Excelsior class as it a ship I would like to see more of, of course that would depend on the availability of the required sets.
