Default LW - Shield FX - How To Q&A?

Does anyone here know how to do really good Star Trek style bubble shields?

I have this old video titled "Surprise.avi" which shows a B5 Omega and Hyperion shooting at a Dilgar ship, which is using Trekish shields. The FX was really cool, but I've not been able to find out how one can creat that FX.

Anyone out there know how to make good shield FX or, at the very least, point me to an on-line tutorial? I've looked and not been able to find anything.
