Default New style Star Trek ships (long)

Hey there,

As some of may know I run a Star Trek rpg offline. I am planning on introducing a new galactic power, operating out of the Perseus arm of the Galaxy.

Now the idea is to use Hodgkin's Law of paraller development, in that there is a planet called Terra in a system called Sol and the Roman empire never fell, but continued to grow into the major world power.

The Empire eventually became just a republic with a senate and hasn't had an Emperor for at least 500 years by this point.

Much like the humans of Earth they went out into space and met other alines and became friends. The end result is a Federation type governement (known as either the Alliance or the Star League, haven't decided yet) who share almost identical morals with the Federation. Eaquality of all sentients, individual rights, socialist care for all citizens, etc...the only diference is that they have no Prime Directive. They believe it is their duty to aducate and advance less developed races to help spare them to horror of potential self destruction. They don't force themselves on anybody, but they offer. Most accept. I am planning on calling them the Solomani in honour of Traveller.

Their primary enemies are the Zhodani (again in honour of Traveller) who are decendants of an Arabic tribe who fled Terra after losing a revolution against the Solomani. They are like Khan and his folowers in that they use genetic enhancement, believe in the strong over the weak. Think Khan meets the Fremen (from DUNE). They are also developed psionists.

Now why have I come here? Well I want to develop their looks (Solomani and Zhondani). The both use Warp Drive, and both are on almost equal technological standing with the Federation.

I turn to you all in the hopes that someone out there might have some ideas that could be bounced back and forth in the hopes of being able to provide my players with visuals.

I humbly seek your help..

I'd be willing to give it a shot, too...

I just need to know when in relation to known Trek history this all takes place.

Okay this all trakes place after the Dominion War. One of my primary ideas was to use the Night SHips as a bassi for their vessels, tall instead of long. You can see them here;

Does this help? I would also though be interested in seeing what ideas you all have, as you may hit something I never even dreamed of

Interesting ships, but a bit too alien to be believable as being of human manufacture.

One thing to remember is that one of the major aspects of what humans consider beauty is left/right symmetry.

As for wild ideas...

The Romans used very large shields. Thus, a Roman-designed starship would also probably have a large, somewhat rounded leading edge. Possibly a hammerhead type design. Like the shields, their ships would likely be intricately decorated and brightly colored. The language used for insignia would probably be some variation of Latin, and would thus use the standard alphabet. However, the number system would be different.

In contrast, Arab design philosopy favors long, sweeping curves (i.e. A scimitar) as well as domes. Also, unlike the Romans, Arab design tends to eschew superfluous decoration (though weapons are sometimes decorated, as are mosques and palaces, of course) and colors tend to be muted beige or earth-tones. The language used would likely be some variation of Arabic, which uses what we know as standard numbers.

Of course, as with all of my posts of this type, I may be completely wrong. I invite anyone more knowledgable in this area to correct my errors.

If you need anyone to design uniforms for these cultures, though, I can do that.

This is true and would certainly play a part in their design. I like the idea of the Hammer head. Sort of like the Dish of Starfleet : )

True, infact I think if we apply the truely Arabic design philosophy as opposed to Islam, we may see a flashier situation.

Give me a day or two to do a little research, then I'll post some sketches.

I do in fact have a very rough draft of something right here, though quite which side it belongs on is anybody's guess. I got the idea late last night and when I look at it now, it looks very Ferengi in some respects. Anyway, I had the idea that these people would follow a similar design philosophy to the federations in some respects, engines on long pylons and an elevated command deck structure. I dunno, tell me what you think.

It is rough after all...

Anyway, more for the design stuf. If you want to see how the romans might design their space ships, look at how they designed their seas ships. They usualy had a large ram on the front for sinking other ships (no cannon) It's concievable that they might keep this feature as a purely decorative one when it inevitably becomes obsolete, stylising it, or maybe they continue to use the ram as a last means of defeating an enemy. Perhaps the roman starships could also be fitted with a ramming device of some sort, or perhaps it sould simply be part of the aestetics.

I've been wanting to do something like this for awhile now(a community project). So I'll start helping after the "Interior Design" contest is done.

Oh now THAT's going to be interesting to see! How many times did this practice of 'advancing the savage' work against them? And how many times did they mess it up? I mean even the Federation screwed the poach several times and they had the 'Prime' as a guide too!

Also will the BORG be present in this area or not?

Alright Cap. I await your designs.

Think Russian/Communists for the Solomani-like guys

Think Ottoman Empire/Arabic Knights for the Zhodani-like guys

Okay I love the design. Yes it is very Ferengi, so I am not sure how we can do away with that aspect. Maybe make it less rounded and more angluar in the back?

The ram might be a neat idea as well.

I like both side aspects (engines forward, engines back) so it is hard for me to decide.

Anyone else?

Oterhwise really good work.
